Wellcome Trust HRB Clinical Research Facility at St. James’s Hospital
The Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is a partnership between Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and St. James’s Hospital and is funded by the Wellcome Trust and the HRB. The 1,400m2 facility opened in October 2013 and is located in the heart of St. James’s Hospital. The CRF is specially designed to facilitate high quality innovative clinical research aimed at understanding diseases and translating new knowledge and treatments into better patient care. It has regular clinical rooms and a 6-bed day ward that fulfill the needs of many studies but has specialist resources to accommodate more complex study requirements including positive and negative pressure isloation rooms; a Faraday cage for high quality electrophysiology; a sample processing laboratory; an exercise physiology suite and a research pharmacy with a state of the art containment and compounding cleanroom. The advantage of conducting trials in a dedicated clinical research facility is that the focus therein is primarily on the conduct of the trial and is separated from busy routine clinical care activity. The guiding principle of the SJH CRF is to provide investigators with a range of resources and support services to enable the conduct of innovative and experimental clinical research involving patients in a dedicated, safe and well regulated environment.
